East Indiamen keeping company in a rising gale. The vessels in this painting are based upon two examples of the work of Fredrik Hendrik Af Chapman, a master Naval architect in the service of the Swedish Navy in the 18th Century. His "Architectural Navalis Mercatoria" is considered a definitive treatise on ship design of the time. Vessels in the East India trade would often attempt to keep together for mutual protection against the native pirates that infested the Indian Ocean.

Vessels off the Strangford Bar, County Down, Northern Ireland, c1905. The vessel on the left is a Ketch of about 80 tons and would have been one of the most common sights off the Irish coast at the time. The other vessel is a "Kilkeel Nickey", in fact a West Cornish Lugger. This type of vessel was a firm favourite of the fishermen of County Down and the Isle of Man for its superb sea-going qualities and ease of handling. It was these vessels which, with the "Portavogie Nobbies" provided the backbone of the Irish Herring Fishery for almost a century.

The vessel "Susan Constant" of 100 tons, in company with "Godspeed" and "Discovery" in 1607. These brave little ships carried the first English settlers to Virginia in the New World where they set up the colony of Jamestown on the James River. The lookout at the foremast top has just seen the Virginia coast.
